Introducing our new weekly series! Here’s A thing is about games, people and cool stories.

In this first episode, Chris Bratt looks at stealth in World of Warcraft and how a mistake, made 14 years ago, ensured a now iconic sound effect would forever strike fear in millions of players.

  5. 1:33 or if you are a Demon hunter and can make use of the spectral sight ability, which makes you able to see stealth’d enemies, even through walls. It’s a rogues worst nightmare.

  11. Interesting, but from the sounds of it this is actually a good mistake made from poor coding.

  13. As a PvP hunter I wear headphones and rely on this sound, and its direction, to react. I swear, if someone played it from their phone behind me I'd probably leap across the room IRL.

  14. Excellent explanation.
My first couple years in WoW as a warlock who did a lot of pvp were punctuated by the sudden rush of terror when hearing that sound. Back then rogues were the natural counter to warlocks and hearing that sound usually meant I was about to die quickly and horribly no matter what I did.
Even today I still get little echoes of that fear when hearing it (even during this video).

  15. Can you imagine it?
Logging into wow and every thing is just empty? No mobs,no players, no npcs just completely empty… and then you hear the sound and realise an all rouge group of alliance players are invading Orggrimar and you logged in at the wrong time.

  16. rogues were always given some kinda stupid broken advantages, refused to play one because theres no sense of accomplishment in being OP. idk about now i quit this game after cata because it was getting to be garbage.
edit: PS all rogue players go hang yourselves please ?
